Practical exam

The practical exam consists of two steps:

Oral exam

The student will be asked some questions on the theoretical aspects discussed during the lessons. Any topic covered in our lectures can be the subject of a question during the exam

Discussion of the project

Two types of project are available:

1) Study, modeling and simulation of a real case study

  • Select a topic of interest.
  • Study of the state-of-art solutions (Edge/Fog, Cloud, IoT) related to the selected topic.
  • Modeling and Simulation using iFogSim.

2) Modeling and simulation of an edge-based data mining case study

  • You will be given a scientific paper to study, in which an edge/IoT-based data mining solution is proposed.
  • Repeat some of the experiments present in the paper. Try out different data mining algorithms (e.g. implemented in Python) on the dataset used in the paper (we will provide it to you).
  • Modeling and Simulation using iFogSim.

More about iFogSim modeling & simulation

During this phase, you must pay close attention to the parameter setting phase. You must carefully establish all the parameter of the simulation, including application, hardware and architectural parameters. Test different placement policies, in particular cloud only, hybrid/fog and edge only, selecting the best one according to your needs. A comparison of the obtained results is required in terms of latency, network usage and energy consumption.

Project delivery

  • Write a report to be delivered before the exam, in which you explain all the details of your project, the choices made during the parameter setting phase, your key findings and results.
  • Prepare a presentation that will help you explain your work during the exam.
  • The deadline for delivering the project (report + code) is 7 days before the exam.
